Challenges and Triumps: Guiding A Native-Led Organization

Home News WNV News Challenges and Triumps: Guiding A Native-Led Organization

From personal growth to community empowerment, Western Native Voice’s journey shows that every challenge is an opportunity to build Native leadership and shape the future.

Over the past five years of working with Western Native Voice (WNV), I have witnessed both the organization’s and my own needed growth. What began as a role I wasn’t sure I was ready for at the time has transformed into a journey. As an introvert, stepping into leadership was intimidating for me. Western Native Voice encouraged me to take the next step—to speak publicly, advocate, and become one of the visible leaders in our work.

Each challenge has fueled my growth, transforming what once felt impossible into opportunities to empower the communities we serve. Along the way, WNV has navigated policy shifts, staff changes, and funding uncertainties, strengthening our commitment. Yet, each obstacle has revealed our community’s strength and reminded me why this work matters—because our people deserve to be heard and represented.

The victories are equally significant: expanding programs, building Native leaders, and witnessing voices from our communities influence decisions. Every campaign completed, every policy win, and every Native leader stepping up proves we are on the right path. Leading WNV has taught me that leadership means listening, creating space for others, and holding to our values. Continuing this journey, I am excited about what lies ahead for Western Native Voice and the communities we serve.

Every vote, every question, every conversation, and every action we take matters.

To Indian Country: Our time is now! It’s time to get involved, raise your voice, and start developing a voting plan for 2026, as well as think about the 2030 Census. Step into leadership, because we need you! Every vote, every question, every conversation, and every action we take matters. Together, we are and continue to shape the future our ancestors dreamed of, and ensure our children thrive for seven generations to come and beyond.
