From Rocky Boy to Expanding Horizons: A message to youth that belief, resilience, and values can transform challenges into opportunities.

Humble Beginnings

I grew up in Rocky Boy as a proud Chippewa Cree and a first-generation college student. One memory I’ll never forget is hitchhiking because my parents didn’t have a car. Life on the reservation isn’t always like the city — resources are limited, and even small things take determination. Those moments taught me early that struggles don’t have to stop you. They can build resilience, vision, and belief.

Obstacles as Opportunity

Einstein once said, “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” That has been true in my life. Obstacles became lessons that pushed me to dream bigger and hold tight to my values.

Preparation Meets Opportunity

After graduating from Montana State University Billings with a degree in History and Political Science, I worked at Billings Clinic as a Supply Chain Technician. At the same time, I drove Lyft, Uber, and Grubhub to make ends meet. One morning, I picked up a passenger from Western Native Voice. That ride led to a business card, an interview, and eventually a job as the Expanding Horizons Youth Program Director. It reminded me that success happens when preparation meets opportunity.

Family and Purpose

Family is my foundation. My parents, siblings, and my wife, Shawna, have supported me every step of the way. Today, our son, Tatum, inspires me to keep pushing forward and serving youth. He reminds me that this work isn’t just about my own path — it’s about building futures for the next generation.

Closing Message for Youth

To young people chasing dreams: your circumstances do not define your future. Your belief, your preparation, and your values do. Keep envisioning possibilities.
