Even the most talented people get stuck sometimes. Whether it’s writer’s block, indecision, or lack of confidence, we’ve all felt stuck. The Rapper J. Cole has a simple exercise he uses whenever he finds himself stuck, and we’ve used it in our Expanding Horizons youth program: The Seven Minute Drill.

What is the Seven Minute Drill?

The rules are simple:

  1. Set a timer for seven minutes.
  2. Write, draw, brainstorm, or create without stopping until the timer goes off.
  3. Don’t edit, erase, or second-guess yourself — just keep going.

You’ve pushed past the most challenging part in seven minutes: starting.

Why It Works for Youth
For young people, perfectionism and self-doubt can feel overwhelming. The Seven Minute Drill reminds them that they already have ideas worth sharing. It helps:

  • Build confidence by showing what they can do in a short time.
  • Normalize struggle — even successful people like J. Cole face creative blocks.
  • Develop life skills like resilience, creativity, and time management.
  • Give them a voice in a space that feels safe and pressure-free.

Why It Works for Leaders and Mentors
For those of us working with youth, this drill is an easy tool to:

  • Engage groups quickly and break the ice.
  • Teach the value of progress over perfection.
  • Encourage reflection and self-expression in a structured way.
  • Create a moment of shared experience, where everyone takes the challenge together.

Why It Works for Everyone
The truth is, this exercise isn’t just for youth — it’s for all of us. Parents, staff, and community members can use the Seven Minute Drill to:

  • Break free from overthinking.
  • Make progress on a decision or task that feels stuck.
  • Practice resilience by pushing through hesitation.
  • Remember that action, not perfection, is what matters most.

This Month’s Challenge
We’re encouraging everyone in our community — youth, families, and friends — to try the Seven Minute Drill at least once this month. Set your timer, let go of judgment, and see what you can create in seven minutes.

You might be surprised by what comes out when you simply permit yourself to begin.
